|Centre of Excellence for Trenchless Technology|
The Crossing Company, along with the City of Edmonton and Ivis Inc., have signed a landmark agreement with the University of Alberta to establish the Centre of Excellence for Trenchless Technology (CETT).
Headquartered at the University of Alberta campus, and organized under the Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty, the Centre will conduct applied research into trenchless construction, provide undergraduate, graduate and doctoral engineering students with training, and conduct outreach programs with the industry. The University and its industrial partners have formed an Industrial Advisory Committee that is responsible for setting the Centre’s strategic direction. The Crossing Company, along with the City of Edmonton and Ivis Inc., form the Industrial Advisory Committee of CETT. The Crossing Company is pleased to be a part of the establishment of CETT and we look forward to assisting the University in its research and educational efforts aimed at advancing the science of underground construction and the dissemination of technical knowledge.
In addition to its founding role in the establishment of CETT and its responsibilities on the Industrial Advisory Committee, The Crossing Company is providing substantial financial support to the Centre for the purpose of funding its research initiatives, and is working closely with graduate and doctoral students in their research efforts. Intensive research into the risks associated with HDD has already begun, with the results thus far culminating in a research paper that was presented at the 2012 NASTT No-Dig Conference in Nashville, Tennessee. The paper, entitled 'Investigation of Horizontal Directional Drilling Construction Risks', identified the risk events that have occurred on 100 HDD projects, the frequency of occurrence, average impact and priority index of each risk. The paper is the first component of a five year research program focused on HDD construction risk. The close association between the University and its industry partners provides students with the opportunity to be immersed in and drive the leading edge of trenchless technology research, which makes the CETT program very attractive to students with proven records of achievement and excellence.
The research initiatives, educational curriculum and outreach program will benefit all industry stakeholders in terms of developing greater certainty, application and economy within trenchless technology, as well as educating tomorrow's engineers, and disseminating knowledge within the industry. The Crossing Company is proud to be a part of the Centre of Excellence for Trenchless Technology, and the opportunity to participate in developing the state of the art.
