Exit Side Safety Unit™ (ESSU) Exceeds Expectations
The Exit Side Safety Unit™ (ESSU) has been working on location near Chetwyn, British Columbia, for Talisman Energy since January 2009. The ESSU has exceeded all of Talisman’s and our expectations. It has significantly reduced the hazards associated with exit side operations and dramatically improved working conditions. The ESSU has also increased drilling and reaming times while also improving the performance of the down hole tooling. The ESSU has worked 118 consecutive days without any downtime. We believe that the success of the ESSU will change the operating practices of our industry, for the better, permanently.

Albian Sands Energy Inc. – Athabasca Oil Sands ProjectLedcor Pipeline Ltd. contracted The Crossing Company to construct the Albian Expansion project. The Albian Expansion Project involved the installation of 15 crossings ranging in length from 500m to 1000m. These projects were unique in that they required a final ream size of up to 1524mm (60"), the largest ream successfully completed in the McMurray formation. This project required multiple rigs working simultaneously and was a vital demonstration of The Crossing Company’s project management capabilities. Below is a quote from the project managers, Mr. Eugene Van Trigt and Mr. Douglas Glad from the Shell Weekly HSSE Newsletter:
“To date this is the quickest and most efficient drill kick off we have seen on this project. The safety and environmental inspections went very well and our HSE group should be commended as well for their support in getting things underway in a timely manner“

The Crossing Company recently completed their 2008 Rig Manager’s meetings. This the key planning event for The Crossing Company because it is an opportunity for our senior employees to gather together after a busy drilling season to review our performance and set our 2008 safety and operations goals. Safety training continues during this time and interactive sessions are attended by our senior employees. These sessions are designed to refocus our company on our stated priorities:
- Safety (behavior and attitudes)
- Effective communication
- Innovation
- Strong Client Relationships
The interactive nature of these sessions is what makes them so successful. Attendees provide the content for the meetings and their constructive thoughts and insight play a significant role in improving the performance of The Crossing Company.
October 2008
The Crossing Company unveiled the Exit Side Safety Unit (ESSU) at the 2008 International Pipeline Exposition that was recently held in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The ESSU was on display in downtown Calgary for 3 days and received positive reviews from some of the world’s most discerning minds that are involved the pipeline sector.
The ESSU will quantitatively enhance the safety and productivity of the Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) industry. Built in a single load, it will eliminate the unacceptable safety hazards and lack of mechanization that are currently the norm on the exit side of the overwhelming majority of conventional HDD projects. The ESSU will be SAFER, more PRODUCTIVE and REDUCE OVERALL COSTS.
For additional information on the ESSU please contact Ryan Bowhay at 1.403.969.4438.

Syncrude Canada Ltd. – East Mine Seepage CurtainIn October of 2007, Syncrude Canada Ltd. (Syncrude) contracted The Crossing Company to construct the East Mine Seepage Curtain (EMSC) using horizontal directional drilling technology. The ESMC involved the installation of five horizontal water wells ranging in length from 800m to 1200m. The wells are constructed within the surficial sand layer, with a vertical horizontal profile that follows the undulating clay/sand interface. The water can be pumped directly from the wells into a nearby creek, thus removing the need to treat the water. This process will improve the stewardship of this important natural resource with the promise of improved economics.
This project was of great significance for The Crossing Company because of the unique application of HDD technology. It was also a great test of our Safety Culture as it was tested against the very exacting standards of Syncrude and passed with flying colours.

The Crossing Company has recently purchased and outfitted a new Astec 80,000lb HDD rig to compliment our rig fleet. This rig was selected based on a power to weight ratio that is unmatched in the industry. At the request of our clients we have specifically designed a rig spread for smaller projects that range in length from 100m to 400m. The compact size of this equipment will reduce both the number of required truck loads as well as crew sizes. Our customers will now enjoy the power of an 80,000lb rig at very attractive operating rates. This rig is outfitted with a full mud recycling system, and is compatible with both walkover and wireline steering systems. This rig has the same technical advantages of our larger rigs only in a much smaller package. Please contact us for pricing and availability.
